Herf with Rocky Patel

In a drive to boost his brand in Europe, Rocky Patel makes regular appearances at various cigar venues. Last Wednesday he came to my town, Veenendaal, once renowned for its short filler cigar industry (1887-2007).

I was looking forward to meeting Rocky. The first two boxes of cigars I ever bought (way back in 2009) were CAO Brazilia Samba and Rocky Patel Meritage Blend Robusto. I remember I couldn't finish the Meritage because it was too strong for my beginner's palate.

When everybody had a cigar (a Rocky Patel Edge), Rocky took the stand and told us what it takes to make cigars. Rather than dividing a tobacco plant into the traditional seco, viso (or volado) and ligero leafs,  Rocky numbers the layers of leafs in a plant, called "primings". This allows him to pinpoint the leafs more precisely, guaranteeing a more consistent blend.

Other quality measures Rocky mentioned are lowering the daily quota of the rollers, strict, multiple selection on construction, and draw tests for each and every cigar.

After Rocky invited us all to his home in Florida and factory in Honduras - he was dead serious - we spent the rest of the evening smoking and chatting. There were samplers for sale which Rocky gladly signed while having his photo taken with his new Dutch friends.
